Location

The River Wye and the Wye Valley are famous for their spectacular vistas and provide glorious walking, cycling and canoeing. It is where tourism was first invented and the bustling market towns of Monmouth and Ross are situated there. The Royal Forest of Dean, with its rich industrial history, has woodland walks, caves and adventures, and a host of different attractions, and arts and crafts.

Social, economic and cultural history is richly illustrated by visits to the World Heritage Sites of Blaenavon and Tintern.

In Bleanavon there is the Big Pit coalmine to explore and the recently restored ironworks, and Tintern of course has its famous Abbey on the banks of the Wye. From the cottage you can see Skirrid Fawr and the Black Mountains which are within easy reach and they open the way to Hay Bluff and the The Brecon Beacons National Park.

Monmouthshire has become a magnet for top-class restaurants..

Becher's Cottage is 5 minutes away from The Bell at Skenfrith, 15 minutes from The Walnut Tree and 25 minutes from The Foxhunter and The Hardwick. The Crown at Whitebrook, with its coveted Michelin Star, is only 20 minutes away. The Abergravenny Food Festival grows in stature every year and quality local produce is availble everywhere.

There are horse shows and National Hunt racing at Chepstow and Hereford, and golf at Celtic Manor Resort, recent venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup and many other attractive courses.

Cardiff provides world-class opera in the Wales Millennium Centre, international rugby and football at the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff Bay hosts Dr Who and a huge variety of entertainments and restaurants. Hereford has its cathedral with the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library in the cloisters.

Ross-on-Wye and Ledbury are beautiful market towns full of character and Hay on Wye has the Literary Festival in May. There are a number of food, wine, cheese, ale and cider festivals throughout the year in different towns and villages.
